Free Moon Sign Calculator — Vedic (Sidereal), Not Western
Your Vedic Moon sign (Rashi) is what Indian astrology actually reads — and it is almost always different from the Western Moon sign by one full sign. Computed live from Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri Ayanamsa. No signup.
What is the Moon sign in Vedic astrology?
In Vedic astrology, your Moon sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the exact moment of your birth, calculated using the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri Ayanamsa correction. The Rashi is the foundation of Vedic prediction — it is the basis for nakshatra, the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha cycle, and the reference for Sade Sati timing. Western (tropical) astrology computes the Moon sign against the seasons rather than the fixed stars, which produces a different value — your Western Moon sign is almost always one full sign later than your Vedic one.
Why your Vedic Moon sign is different from your Western one
- Two different zodiacs — Western (tropical) starts at the spring equinox; Vedic (sidereal) is anchored to the fixed stars. They have drifted apart by ~24 degrees.
- Lahiri Ayanamsa correction — Vedic subtracts the current ayanamsa from each tropical position; Zavora uses Lahiri, the IAU and Government-of-India standard.
- Why this matters — Mahadasha, nakshatra, Sade Sati, Vimshottari Dasha all key off the Vedic Moon sign. Reading the Western value with Vedic techniques gives the wrong period, the wrong nakshatra, the wrong remedies.
How Zavora computes it
Swiss Ephemeris for arc-second-accurate Moon longitude, Lahiri Ayanamsa for sidereal correction, classical 27-nakshatra division per Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Read the full methodology →
Frequently asked
What is the difference between my Vedic Moon sign and my Western Moon sign?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (anchored to the fixed stars, corrected by the Lahiri Ayanamsa); Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. The two systems have drifted apart by about 24 degrees, so your Vedic Moon sign is almost always one full sign earlier than your Western Moon sign. Vedic prediction techniques (Mahadasha, nakshatra, Sade Sati) only work with the Vedic sign.
What is Rashi in Vedic astrology?
Rashi is the Sanskrit word for the Moon sign. When an Indian astrologer asks 'what is your rashi?' they mean the Vedic Moon sign — the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. It is the most-referenced placement in Vedic astrology.
Do I need my exact birth time for the Moon sign?
The Moon moves about one degree every two hours, so the Moon sign rarely shifts due to small birth-time inaccuracies. If your birth time is approximate within an hour or two, the result is reliable. The nakshatra is more time-sensitive.
Why is my Moon sign more important than my Sun sign in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the chart of the mind, emotion, and instinctive nature. The Sun describes the soul's purpose but the Moon describes how you actually live, feel, and respond. Every Vedic prediction technique keys off the Moon sign and the Moon nakshatra at birth.
What does my Moon sign actually predict?
The Moon sign sets the tone for your emotional life and relationship style. It is the anchor for your Vimshottari Mahadasha — the planetary-period system that times major life chapters. Daily Vedic horoscopes (rashifal) are written against the Moon sign, not the Sun sign.
