Jyotish Term
Mangal Dosha — मंगल दोष
Short answer. Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha) is the condition of having Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. It is classically associated with delays, friction, or disharmony in marriage, and is heavily considered in traditional Indian matchmaking.
Mangal Dosha is one of the most commonly discussed conditions in Indian matchmaking — and one of the most often misinterpreted. The classical rule is that Mars in 1, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from the lagna creates the dosha; some traditions also count the Moon and Venus as reference points. The supposed effect is friction in marriage — delayed marriage, conflicts with the spouse, or in severe traditional readings, harm to the spouse. Modern Vedic practice tempers the classical severity significantly. Mangal Dosha is considered to be 'cancelled' (Mangal Dosha Bhanga) under many conditions — Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio), Mars exalted in Capricorn, Mars aspected by Jupiter, both partners having the dosha (the most cited 'cancellation'), and several others. In Ashtakoot Gun Milan matching, Mangal Dosha is checked separately from the eight gunas. A flagged dosha is a reason for further chart analysis, not a verdict against the relationship.
