Free Atmakaraka Calculator — The Soul Significator
Of the seven main grahas, the one with the highest degree in its sign at your birth is your Atmakaraka — the planet ruling the deepest karmic theme of your life. Classical Jaimini, computed from Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri ayanamsa. No signup.
What is the Atmakaraka?
In classical Vedic astrology — particularly the Jaimini system — the Atmakaraka (Sanskrit: ātma-kāraka, "soul significator") is the planet that holds the highest degree within its sign at the exact moment of birth, counted from the seven main grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Rahu and Ketu are excluded by Parashari and Jaimini consensus. The Atmakaraka is treated as the karmic anchor of the chart — the planet whose lessons the soul has come into this lifetime to resolve. The Jaimini system extends this to a full ladder of seven karakas in descending degree order: Atmakaraka → Amatyakaraka → Bhratrukaraka → Matrukaraka → Putrakaraka → Gnatikaraka → Darakaraka.
What your Atmakaraka reveals
- Your soul's central karmic theme — Sun (authority), Moon (feeling), Mars (action), Mercury (intellect), Jupiter (wisdom), Venus (love), or Saturn (karmic resolution).
- What your spiritual sadhana is — the discipline that turns the planet's lessons into maturity rather than into suffering.
- Why the same Mahadasha hits different people differently — filtered by the Atmakaraka's signature.
- The seven-karaka ladder underneath — Amatyakaraka, Bhratru, Matru, Putra, Gnati, Darakaraka.
How Zavora computes it
Swiss Ephemeris for arc-second-accurate planetary longitudes, Lahiri Ayanamsa for sidereal correction, then ranks the seven main grahas (excluding Rahu/Ketu) by degree within their sign. Read the full methodology →
Frequently asked
What is Atmakaraka in Vedic astrology?
Atmakaraka (Sanskrit: ātma-kāraka, 'soul significator') is the planet with the highest degree within its sign at birth, taken from the seven main grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Rahu and Ketu are excluded. Classical Jaimini astrology treats it as the karmic anchor of the chart — the planet whose lessons the soul has come into this lifetime to resolve.
How is the Atmakaraka calculated?
Take the seven main grahas. For each, compute the degree-within-sign at birth (0° to 29.99°) using sidereal (Lahiri) longitudes. The planet with the highest degree-within-sign is the Atmakaraka. Rahu and Ketu are not counted in this selection.
Why are Rahu and Ketu excluded?
Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets (chhaya grahas) — lunar nodes, not physical bodies. The Parashari-Jaimini consensus is to use only the seven main grahas for karaka selection. Some modern texts include Rahu as an alternate; classical practice does not.
What are the other six Jaimini karakas?
After Atmakaraka, the six remaining grahas form a descending degree ladder: Amatyakaraka (mind/counsellor), Bhratrukaraka (siblings), Matrukaraka (mother), Putrakaraka (children), Gnatikaraka (relatives/enemies), and Darakaraka (spouse). Each governs the specific life sphere named in its title.
What does my Atmakaraka say about my life?
It names the central karmic theme. Sun Atmakaraka makes the lifetime about authority and dharma; Moon about feeling and motherhood; Mars about courage and action; Mercury about intellect and exchange; Jupiter about wisdom and grace; Venus about love and beauty; Saturn about discipline and karmic resolution.
